Hi everypawdy - it's Shep here! I have decided to do a little blog about what it is like to learn about agility at Druac.
My humans Nic and Jo have both helped me on my agility journey and I think they have enjoyed it so far - I know I certainly have!
I have been doing agility for 2 years now and I started about a year after my humans rescued me from 'Dog Samaritans'.
To start off my humans were really rubbish with giving me the correct commands and I thought that it was much more fun to run around the course (freestyle agility I like to call it), break through the fence and run to dad who was usually sitting with a cup of coffee (so I'd knock it over him for good measure), or even once (and my human was SO EMBARRASSED for some reason) I decided to see what it would be like to WEE on the tunnel!
After a few visits to the club though my humans finally got the hang of what they were supposed to be doing and I started to learn the equipment was really fun! I also LOVED my fab helpers - Dean, Doug, Gerry, Carrie, Jean and Marcia have all helped me with lots of things during my lessons!
I had two lots of lessons - In the beginners class I concentrated on things like jumps, tunnels and the tyre that you can see me jumping through in the picture above.
In my second set of lessons I learnt something called 'contacts', which is where I go over things like the A frame, dog walk and seesaw. I wasn't too good at getting the contact on the seesaw to start with, I kept using it as a launch pad and becoming airborne but I am much better now!
I am now graduated from my lessons, and my human even managed to win the 'most improved handler award' in 2014. (Between you and me it wasn't difficult because to start off with she didn't even remember her left and right commands!!)
I absolutely love DRUAC and I have come on so much since becoming a member. I have got so many dog and human friends in the club, and my current target is to learn how to weave! I am still working on this because I had to stop on Sunday after taking my human's finger for a treat - WHOOOPS!!
I would just like to say that absolutely any dog can do - and be fantastic at - agility - I have friends who are schnauzers, friends who are kelpies and friends who are huskies, as well as the usual concentration of collies and spaniels!
I would like to say that you and your humans should be brave and come and have a go - you will end up addicted like we all are, and you'll also get to have a big old slobbery smooch from me too!
